Rini Sampath, a 31-year-old government contractor originally from Theni in Tamil Nadu, has entered the race to become Mayor of Washington, D.C., marking a historic moment as the first South Asian candidate to appear on the Democratic primary ballot for the post. Her candidacy adds a new dimension to the upcoming election, which is set to take place later this year.
Running on a platform centered around the theme “Fix the Basics,” Sampath has outlined a campaign focused on improving essential civic services and restoring trust in local governance. Her priorities include addressing infrastructure concerns such as potholes, tackling environmental issues like wastewater spills in the Potomac River, reducing living costs, and improving emergency response times, particularly 911 services.
Sampath, who moved to the United States at the age of seven, has lived in Washington, D.C. for over a decade. Over the course of her career, she has worked on improving government programs and public service delivery, experience she says equips her to address systemic inefficiencies in the city’s administration. Her campaign messaging emphasizes accountability and delivery on promises, positioning her as a candidate focused on practical governance.

The mayoral race is taking place in a political landscape long dominated by the Democratic Party, which has held uninterrupted control of the office since 1975. Sampath faces competition from several candidates, including Janeese Lewis George, Kenyan McDuffie, Gary Goodweather, Robert L. Gross, and Rhonda Hamilton.
The Democratic primary is scheduled for June 16, with the general election to follow on November 3. Given the city’s political trends, the primary is expected to play a decisive role in determining the next mayor. Sampath’s candidacy is being closely watched, particularly for its potential to broaden representation and bring fresh perspectives to the leadership of the U.S. capital.
