A 26-year-old Indian-origin pilot was killed in a helicopter crash in the US state of Georgia just hours after marrying his longtime partner and beginning what was meant to be the first day of their honeymoon. Dave Fiji, a first officer with Delta Air Lines whose family traces its roots to Kerala, died when the Robinson R66 helicopter carrying him and his newlywed wife crashed near Dawsonville on Friday. The helicopter pilot was also killed in the accident, while Dave's wife survived with injuries.
According to family members and local media reports, Dave married Jessni, a nurse, at The Revere wedding venue in Dawsonville in the presence of around 400 guests. The couple had known each other for nearly a decade after meeting through their church community. Following the wedding reception, the newlyweds boarded a helicopter bound for DeKalb-Peachtree Airport as part of a special post-wedding departure before spending the night in downtown Atlanta.
The flight, however, never reached its destination. The helicopter crashed in a remote wooded area near Mount Vernon Drive in Dawson County, not far from the wedding venue. Emergency responders launched a search operation after the aircraft went missing. Authorities later located the wreckage in a heavily wooded region, where rescue teams discovered the victims and began recovery efforts.

Dave's father, George Fiji, said the newlywed bride remained trapped inside the wreckage for several hours before being rescued. Despite suffering cuts and bruises, she survived the crash and is currently recovering at a hospital in the Atlanta metropolitan area. Family members described her condition as stable but emotionally devastating following the sudden loss of her husband on the day of their wedding.
The tragedy has been made even more poignant by reports that Dave had expressed concerns about the weather conditions before departure. According to his father, the young pilot believed visibility was extremely poor and questioned whether the flight should proceed. George Fiji said his son reportedly warned that such conditions were unsuitable for flying, although the helicopter pilot decided to continue the journey after indicating that the aircraft would operate at a higher altitude.
The National Transportation Safety Board has launched an investigation into the crash and is working to determine the exact cause of the accident. Officials have not yet released preliminary findings, and investigators are expected to examine weather conditions, flight operations, and the helicopter's technical systems. The incident has drawn widespread attention in both the United States and the Indian community, where many have expressed condolences to the family and support for the surviving bride.
