India’s High Commissioner to Australia Nagesh Singh held a series of meetings with South Australian leaders on Friday to explore opportunities for strengthening economic and strategic cooperation. Discussions covered trade and investment, critical minerals, defence, space, education, technology and innovation, with a focus on expanding existing India-South Australia partnerships.

Singh met South Australia’s Minister for State Development Chris Picton and discussed ways to deepen economic engagement between India and the state. The discussions included opportunities in trade, investment, critical minerals, defence, space, education, technology and innovation. Singh also participated in a Trade and Investment Roundtable facilitated by Adelaide’s Department of State Development, where opportunities to expand business partnerships were examined.

The Indian High Commissioner also met the Study Adelaide team and interacted with Indian international students. He was briefed on initiatives aimed at supporting international students when they arrive in South Australia, as well as the contribution of Indian students to the state’s education ecosystem. The engagement also highlighted the broader India-Australia education partnership.

Critical minerals and industrial cooperation featured prominently during Singh’s meeting with South Australia’s Assistant Minister for Copper, Steel, Critical Metals and Minerals, Lawrence Ben. The discussions focused on resilient supply chains and opportunities for cooperation in critical minerals, copper and steel. Ben also acknowledged the contribution of the Indian diaspora to people-to-people ties between India and South Australia.

Singh separately met South Australia’s Minister for Multicultural Affairs Nadia Clancy, with discussions covering Indian culture, community links and the role of people-to-people connections in strengthening bilateral relations. The Indian community was highlighted as an important cultural bridge between India and South Australia, adding a broader social dimension to the economic and strategic engagement.

The High Commissioner also called on South Australia’s Governor Frances Adamson, with discussions centred on the wider India-Australia relationship and opportunities for deeper cooperation. Education, space, critical minerals and defence were among the areas highlighted as having potential for further collaboration, reflecting the growing scope of engagement between India and South Australia.
