On July 17, India signaled a cautious stance on reviving the Russia-India-China (RIC) trilateral framework, emphasizing that any resumption depends on mutual convenience among the three nations. During a media briefing, External Affairs Ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal described RIC as a platform for discussing global and regional issues but noted that no meeting has been scheduled, with official sources confirming no active discussions.
The statement follows China’s endorsement of Russia’s push to restart the RIC mechanism, which Beijing claims would enhance regional stability. Russia’s deputy foreign minister Andrei Rudenko highlighted the trio’s role as BRICS founders, expressing Moscow’s keen interest. However, the RIC framework has been dormant since the Covid-19 pandemic and the India-China military standoff in Eastern Ladakh.
China reiterated its readiness to advance trilateral cooperation, but India’s reserved approach underscores lingering geopolitical complexities.
