India is likely to witness an increased number of heatwave days between April and June this year, with several regions expected to experience above-normal temperatures, according to the India Meteorological Department. The warning highlights growing concerns over extreme weather patterns as the summer season intensifies across the country.
Mrutyunjay Mohapatra, Director General of the IMD, stated that northern parts of the Indo-Gangetic plains, eastern coastal states, and western regions, including Gujarat and Maharashtra, are likely to face more frequent heatwave conditions. He noted that these areas are climatologically prone to high temperatures, which could exceed 40 degrees Celsius during peak summer months.
Mohapatra explained that regions such as Vidarbha in Maharashtra typically record temperatures between 41 and 42 degrees Celsius during this period, while states like Uttar Pradesh and Haryana often experience temperatures ranging from 40 to 44 degrees Celsius in May. He emphasized the need for preparedness as such high-temperature days are expected to become more common.

To mitigate the impact on vulnerable populations, the IMD has been implementing several outreach measures, including the use of digital communication platforms. The department has set up WhatsApp groups to share real-time weather updates with outdoor workers such as street vendors and agricultural labourers, ensuring timely access to critical information.
Additionally, the IMD has collaborated with government systems such as the Common Alert Protocol of the National Disaster Management Authority to disseminate alerts widely. Display boards have also been installed in public spaces to inform people about heatwave conditions and recommended safety measures, especially in areas where digital access may be limited.
The IMD continues to issue seasonal forecasts, extended outlooks, and district-level warnings to help authorities and citizens prepare for extreme weather. Heatwave conditions are expected across several regions, including parts of West Bengal, Odisha, Andhra Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Telangana, and the Indo-Gangetic plains, underlining the need for increased awareness and proactive measures during the summer months.
