Union Home Minister Amit Shah is set to visit the India–Bangladesh international border in Assam’s Cachar district on February 21, in a move seen as politically significant ahead of the upcoming Assembly elections in the state. The visit comes as the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party continues to highlight action against illegal immigration from Bangladesh as a key electoral plank.
According to party sources, Shah is expected to arrive in Assam on February 20 and travel the next morning to Natanpur village near the international border. During the visit, he will participate in an event under the Vibrant Villages Programme (VVP), an initiative of the Union Home Ministry aimed at boosting development in border areas.
Preparations for the high-profile visit are underway. Assam minister Kaushik Rai and Cachar district commissioner Ayush Garg, along with officials from the Border Security Force and state police, recently inspected Natanpur village to review security and logistical arrangements.

Natanpur, located in the Katigorah area of the Cachar district, has been under close watch in recent years. Officials say more than 200 illegal migrants—including nationals from Bangladesh and Myanmar—have been apprehended from the area, underscoring its strategic sensitivity along the border.
The Vibrant Villages Programme focuses on improving livelihoods in border regions through tourism promotion, cultural preservation, skill development, and strengthening agriculture and allied sectors. Shah’s visit is expected to spotlight the government’s twin focus on border security and grassroots development in sensitive frontier districts.
