Chaos unfolded in Meerut on Friday as members of the Akhil Bharatiya Hindu Suraksha Sangathan took to the streets, demanding the immediate release of the controversial film Udaipur Files. The movie, centered on the brutal 2022 murder of Udaipur tailor Kanhaiya Lal, was abruptly halted by a Delhi High Court order just hours before its scheduled 5 PM screening at a local mall.
Sachin Sirohi, the organization's national president, expressed fury over the decision, stating, "This isn’t just a film—it’s the truth about Kanhaiya Lal’s murder. Over 1.1 billion Hindus deserve to see it!" Sirohi revealed that his group had booked 17 tickets for the premiere, only to be informed of the court’s stay, leaving supporters enraged. The group has escalated their demands to the mall’s head office and even urged the Central government to make the film tax-free.
The Delhi High Court, in a ruling on Thursday, blocked the release of Udaipur Files—originally set for July 11—pending a Central government review of petitions claiming the film could "incite disharmony" in society. Justices D K Upadhyaya and Anish Dayal ordered petitioners to submit their grievances to the Centre within 48 hours.

The film revisits the chilling June 2022 murder of Kanhaiya Lal, allegedly killed by Mohammad Riyaz and Mohammad Ghous in retaliation for the tailor’s support of former BJP leader Nupur Sharma’s controversial remarks about Prophet Mohammed. The National Investigation Agency (NIA) investigated the case, charging the accused under the Unlawful Activities Prevention Act (UAPA) and Indian Penal Code (IPC). The trial continues in Jaipur’s Special NIA court.
