Heavy rainfall and substantial water discharge from the Jayakwadi and Majalgaon dams have triggered a flood-like situation along the Godavari River in Maharashtra’s Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, Jalna, and Beed districts, officials reported on Tuesday. The deluge, described as resembling a cloudburst in some areas, has inundated several villages in the Marathwada region, raising concerns about potential damage to homes, crops, and infrastructure as the monsoon season intensifies.
Since Monday night, the catchment areas of the Jayakwadi dam in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar and the Majalgaon dam in Beed received torrential rains, with Javlala and Ramoda recording 160 mm and 120 mm, respectively. Other areas, including Gangapur (46 mm), Paithan (92 mm), and Bhendala (52 mm), also saw significant rainfall, pushing the near-capacity dams to release water. By Tuesday morning, Jayakwadi discharged 1.03 lakh cusecs and Majalgaon 1.15 lakh cusecs into the Godavari, causing the river to swell and threaten low-lying areas.
Excess rainfall in Ghansawangi and Ambad talukas of Jalna and Gevrai taluka in Beed has exacerbated the situation, with floodwaters encroaching on villages. Authorities are monitoring the situation, and local disaster response teams are on alert to assist affected communities. The Marathwada region, prone to both droughts and floods, has faced similar challenges in recent years, with heavy rains in 2024 causing significant agricultural losses, according to state records.

The India Meteorological Department has forecast continued rainfall in Marathwada, raising fears of further flooding. Emergency measures, including potential evacuations, are being prepared as the region braces for more rain, with authorities emphasizing the need for coordinated relief efforts to mitigate the crisis.
