The Gujarat government on Saturday appointed Ahmedabad Police Commissioner Gyanender Singh Malik as the new Director General and Inspector General of Police (DGP) of the state, filling the top police post with immediate effect. The announcement was made through an official notification issued by the state Home Department.
According to the notification, Malik, a 1993-batch Indian Police Service (IPS) officer of the Gujarat cadre, has been appointed to the vacant cadre post of DGP, Gujarat, succeeding the interim arrangement that was in place following the retirement of the previous incumbent. The appointment brings clarity to the leadership of the state police force after a transitional phase.
Malik was serving as the Commissioner of Police, Ahmedabad City, prior to his elevation. He had taken charge of the city’s police administration in July 2023 following a senior-level reshuffle. Before returning to Gujarat, he was on central deputation with the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF), where he held the position of Additional Director General (North), gaining experience in central security operations.

Over a career spanning more than three decades, Malik has held several key positions in both state and central policing establishments. Originally from Haryana, he joined the IPS in 1994 and holds academic qualifications in engineering and law. His service record includes postings in crime control, law and order management, and internal security operations.
He has been recognised for his service with multiple honours, including the Police Medal for Meritorious Service in 2010 and the President’s Police Medal for Distinguished Service in 2017. He has also played leadership roles within the IPS fraternity, including being elected president of the Gujarat IPS Officers’ Association earlier this year.
With his appointment, Malik will now lead the Gujarat Police at a time when the force manages law and order in one of India’s most industrialised states. His responsibilities will include overseeing crime prevention, internal security, and coordination during major public events. He is scheduled to serve in the position until his retirement in November 2028, giving him a tenure of more than two years as the state’s top police officer.
