United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres called on President Droupadi Murmu at Rashtrapati Bhavan on the sidelines of the India AI Impact Summit 2026 in New Delhi. The meeting underscored the growing collaboration between India and the United Nations, particularly in the field of Artificial Intelligence and multilateral governance reforms.
According to the President’s Secretariat, Guterres appreciated India’s leadership in convening the AI Impact Summit and acknowledged its longstanding engagement with the UN across diverse global initiatives. President Murmu welcomed the UN chief’s proposal to establish a global scientific panel on AI, aimed at ensuring that emerging technologies serve humanity equitably and responsibly.
During the discussion, President Murmu highlighted the pressing need for reform of the United Nations Security Council, stating that the existing structure no longer reflects contemporary geopolitical realities. She emphasized that the Global South must have a stronger voice in decision-making processes and asserted that meaningful reform is essential to preserve the relevance and credibility of multilateral institutions.

The President also referred to the ‘UN-80’ initiative as a constructive platform for reform but stressed that developmental priorities of the Global South should remain protected in any restructuring effort. She reiterated India’s continued commitment to multilateralism and extended her best wishes to Guterres for the remainder of his tenure.
Earlier in the day, Guterres met Prime Minister Narendra Modi, where discussions focused on inclusive AI development and the UN’s role in shaping global standards. In his address at the summit, Guterres warned against AI fragmentation and called for interoperable global standards to prevent technological rivalry from undermining cooperation.
He further advocated for science-led AI guardrails to protect human rights and preserve human agency while fostering innovation. Stressing the importance of shared benchmarks and risk-based frameworks, Guterres noted that common standards would enable startups and nations alike to scale AI solutions globally with confidence and responsibility.
