The government has granted security clearance to veteran aviation executive Willie Walsh, clearing the final hurdle for his appointment as the Chief Executive Officer of IndiGo, sources told NDTV Profit. Walsh is expected to assume charge on or before August 3 after completing his tenure as Director General of the International Air Transport Association (IATA) on July 31. His appointment comes at a crucial time for India's largest airline as it continues expanding its domestic dominance and international operations.

Walsh will succeed Pieter Elbers, who exited the company in March. As CEO, he will oversee IndiGo's overall operations, strategic planning and long-term growth initiatives. The appointment brings one of the aviation industry's most experienced leaders to the helm of the airline, which has emerged as the dominant player in India's fast-growing aviation sector. His extensive experience in airline management and corporate restructuring is expected to support IndiGo's ambitions to strengthen its global presence while maintaining operational efficiency.

Born in Dublin, Ireland, on October 25, 1961, William "Willie" Walsh began his aviation career in 1979 as a cadet pilot with Aer Lingus. He later became a Boeing 737 captain while earning a Master of Business Administration degree from Trinity College Dublin. Walsh moved into airline management in the late 1990s, becoming Chief Operating Officer of Aer Lingus in 2000 before being appointed Chief Executive Officer in 2001. During his leadership, he implemented a major restructuring programme that helped restore the airline's profitability.

In 2005, Walsh took over as CEO of British Airways, where he led the airline through rising fuel costs and global economic challenges while implementing significant cost-cutting measures. His most notable achievement came in 2011 when he spearheaded the merger of British Airways and Iberia to create International Airlines Group (IAG). As CEO of IAG until September 2020, he expanded the group through strategic acquisitions and operational improvements, overseeing major carriers including British Airways, Iberia, Vueling and Aer Lingus.

Since April 2021, Walsh has served as the eighth Director General of IATA, representing airlines worldwide on aviation safety, regulation, sustainability and industry policy. During his tenure, he played an important role in supporting the aviation sector's recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic while advocating for the industry's commitment to achieving net-zero carbon emissions by 2050. He also previously served on the IATA Board of Governors from 2005 to 2018, including a term as its chair.

Walsh takes charge at a significant stage in IndiGo's growth journey. The airline currently operates more than 2,200 daily flights, connecting 95 domestic destinations and over 40 international locations. As of the end of December, IndiGo held nearly 64% of India's domestic aviation market and operated a fleet of around 440 aircraft. With demand for air travel continuing to grow and the airline pursuing further international expansion, Walsh's global leadership experience is expected to play a key role in shaping the company's next phase of development.
