An eight-year-old Palestinian girl and her father were killed on Sunday, September 6, after the civilian vehicle they were travelling in was struck by an Israeli military airstrike in western Gaza City. The fatal drone strike occurred on what was scheduled to be the young girl's first day of the new academic school year. The tragedy has intensified local and international focus on the severe risks confronting non-combatants, particularly children, as intense military operations persist across the blockaded territory.

The victims have been identified as Wafaa Yousef Nabil Akila, who was scheduled to celebrate her ninth birthday on November 11, and her 36-year-old father, Youssef Nabil Rabah Akila. According to medical sources from the nearby Al Shifa Hospital—the enclave's largest medical facility—the family's vehicle was moving through the Al Nasr neighborhood when it was targeted. The strike occurred in the immediate vicinity of the Al Wehda Tower, heavily damaging the surrounding civilian infrastructure. The young girl was reportedly killed instantly by the blast, which completely incinerated the frame of the moving sedan.

Local reports indicate that the targeted vehicle was tracked and struck by an Israeli military reconnaissance unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) commonly used for surveillance. In a formal statement addressing the operation, an Israeli military spokesperson confirmed the strike but maintained that forces targeted a specific Hamas militant operating in the sector. The military noted that it was still looking into the final results and civilian casualties of the attack. The strike also wounded six other bystanders in the residential area, leaving two individuals in critical condition.

Emergency medical teams and local civil defense workers arrived at the scene shortly after the explosion to extinguish the flames and recover the victims from the smoking wreckage. The casualties and remains were quickly transported to Al Shifa Hospital, where head official Dr. Mohamed Abu Selmia confirmed the fatalities. In the aftermath of the attack, large crowds of residents and relatives gathered around the charred remains of the vehicle. Video footage circulating on social media showed onlookers inspecting the shattered glass and twisted metal left behind by the missile impact.

The deaths have drawn widespread attention to the ongoing civilian toll of the conflict, where schools and infrastructure have been heavily disrupted across the Gaza Strip. For Wafaa’s family, a day that was traditionally meant to mark a milestone in her primary education instead transformed into a sudden period of community mourning. International human rights organizations have renewed their urgent calls for stricter adherence to international humanitarian law to protect non-combatants in densely populated urban combat zones. Later that Sunday, two separate Israeli strikes in Gaza City claimed the lives of two more people, including another child, as local violence continues to rise.
