At least two migrant workers were killed and more than 46 others were hospitalised following an ammonia gas leak at a seafood export processing unit in Tamil Nadu's Thiruvallur district on Sunday. The incident occurred at the St Peter's and Paul Seafoods Exports facility in Kannigaipair near Periyapalayam, triggering a major emergency response and raising concerns about industrial safety standards at the unit.
According to officials, the gas leak took place during the afternoon, exposing dozens of workers to toxic fumes. Most of those affected were migrant labourers employed at the seafood processing facility. Workers reportedly began experiencing breathing difficulties, dizziness and vomiting shortly after the leak, prompting authorities and emergency services to rush to the site and evacuate the affected employees.
The injured workers were transported to nearby hospitals for treatment, with more than 46 people admitted for medical care. Hospital authorities said at least five workers were in critical condition and were being closely monitored. Some of the seriously affected patients may be shifted to specialised medical facilities in Chennai for advanced treatment if required.

Visuals from the scene showed ambulances ferrying workers to hospitals as emergency personnel worked to contain the situation. Local authorities launched rescue and relief operations immediately after receiving information about the leak. Officials are also assessing the extent of exposure and ensuring that no additional workers remain at risk within the facility.
Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Vijay has directed authorities to take strict action against those found responsible for the incident. State Information Technology Minister R. Kumar said the government has sought a detailed report on the circumstances that led to the gas leak and has instructed officials to ensure that all affected workers receive proper medical treatment and support.
The incident has once again drawn attention to workplace safety practices in industries that use hazardous chemicals such as ammonia, which is commonly employed in refrigeration and food-processing operations. Authorities are expected to conduct a thorough investigation to determine the cause of the leak, examine whether safety protocols were followed and establish accountability for the deaths and injuries resulting from the accident.
