In a visionary leap for hospitality, brothers Virendra and Pushpendra Kushwaha, proprietors of Ananta Village Farm Stay in Shankarpur, have acquired a decommissioned Border Security Force (BSF) Avro cargo aircraft for Rs 40 lakh via a tender in Delhi. Transported to Ujjain at an additional cost of Rs 5.5 lakh, the plane, retired in 2009, will be transformed into a groundbreaking five-room luxury hotel at their farmhouse on Maksi Road. This ambitious project, set to capitalize on Ujjain’s upcoming airport opening and the 2028 Simhastha Kumbh Mela, promises a novel tourism experience rooted in aviation heritage.
The aircraft, slated for completion within a year, will feature five air-conditioned cabins with modern amenities and aviation-inspired decor, preserving the plane’s authentic layout. The cockpit will retain its pilot seat for immersive photoshoots, while the site will offer a cafe, a garden area, and a swimming pool beneath the fuselage, catering to events, pre-wedding shoots, and tourists. Virendra Kushwaha remarked, “I bought this as scrap. If a vendor comes to buy, I will sell it. Otherwise, I plan to convert it into a hotel with rooms inside,” highlighting the project’s flexibility and entrepreneurial spirit.
This venture marks the brothers’ second aviation-themed endeavor, following their earlier purchase of a helicopter. Unlike Indore’s aircraft-turned-restaurants, Ujjain’s project will pioneer a full-fledged stay experience in Madhya Pradesh, aligning with India’s growing trend of repurposing aviation relics, seen in Ludhiana’s Boeing 737 eatery and Kolkata’s Airbus cafe. The Kushwahas aim to attract both the millions of pilgrims expected for Simhastha 2028 and adventure-seeking tourists, leveraging Ujjain’s spiritual and cultural allure.

Strategically timed with the city’s new airport, the aircraft hotel positions Ujjain as an emerging tourism hub. Enhanced connectivity via Maharishi Valmiki International Airport, Ayodhya Dham Junction, and road links from Lucknow, Varanasi, and Gorakhpur will draw visitors to this unique attraction. By blending luxury, nostalgia, and innovation, the Kushwahas’ grounded plane promises to redefine hospitality, offering guests a chance to “board” a stationary flight steeped in comfort and adventure.
