The Gauhati High Court has appointed a fast-track sessions court for day-to-day trial proceedings in the high-profile death case of renowned Assamese singer Zubeen Garg, following a request from Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma.
Assam Cabinet decided to formally approach the court after mounting public pressure and demands from Garg's family for expedited justice in the mysterious circumstances surrounding the singer's death in Singapore on September 19, 2025. CM Sarma announced the move post-Cabinet meeting, emphasizing sensitivity around public order and governance credibility.
The dedicated court, enabled under Section 346(1) of the BNSS 2023, aims to ensure continuous hearings amid frustration over delays at the regular Guwahati trial court. A Special Investigation Team (SIT) has already filed chargesheets naming seven accused, including Garg's former manager Siddharth Sarma, linked to financial mismanagement allegations.

Garg, a cultural icon in Assam, died while swimming in Singaporean waters, sparking widespread grief and conspiracy theories. Probes revealed potential fund misappropriation, including Rs 16 lakh allegedly used by Sarma for property purchase, alongside over 300 witness statements examined.
The High Court's directive aligns with earlier PIL hearings monitoring the case, including quashing unrelated detentions for procedural lapses. This fast-tracking responds to civil society and opposition calls for transparency in what remains a deeply emotive investigation.
Assam's push underscores commitment to swift judicial closure in celebrity cases with statewide resonance. As proceedings accelerate, focus shifts to evidence presentation, with the state balancing thoroughness against public expectations for accountability.
