A Bill to grant statutory recognition to Amaravati as the sole capital of Andhra Pradesh will be introduced in the Lok Sabha on Wednesday. The Andhra Pradesh Reorganisation (Amendment) Bill, 2026, seeks to amend the Andhra Pradesh Reorganisation Act, 2014, by specifying Amaravati as the new capital, replacing the existing phrase “and there shall be a new capital” with “and Amaravati shall be the new capital.”
The proposed amendment clarifies that the term ‘Amaravati’ includes areas notified under the Andhra Pradesh Capital Region Development Authority Act, 2014. The Bill is set to be deemed effective from June 2, 2024. Its statement of objects and reasons highlights that the Andhra Pradesh Legislative Assembly passed a resolution on March 28, 2026, requesting the Central Government to amend Section 5 of the Reorganisation Act to formally recognize Amaravati as the capital.
The move aims to provide statutory clarity on the capital city of Andhra Pradesh. The TDP-led NDA government in the state has been working toward this objective, and the Assembly resolution during a special session formally requested the Central Government to declare Amaravati as the sole capital city of the state. The resolution also recommended inserting the words “at Amaravati” in Section 5(2) of the Act and adding an explanation that Amaravati includes the notified Capital Region areas, in line with the advice of the High Court’s order dated March 3, 2022.
