The Election Commission of India on Saturday released the final electoral rolls following the post–Special Intensive Revision (SIR) in West Bengal, with Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s Bhowanipore Assembly constituency witnessing large-scale deletions. According to the updated lists, 47,111 voters were removed from the rolls in the south Kolkata seat on grounds including death, permanent relocation, prolonged absence, or being marked as bogus entries.
In addition to the deletions, 14,154 voters in the constituency have been placed under the ‘under adjudication’ category and are awaiting clearance from judicial officers. The publication of the revised rolls concludes a three-month revision exercise that saw protests, legal challenges and sharp political exchanges between parties over the accuracy and transparency of the process.
Considering the scale of deletions in her constituency, Mamata Banerjee has reportedly convened multiple meetings with leaders of the Trinamool Congress and Booth Level Agents (BLAs) to assess the situation. Party sources indicated that the leadership is closely reviewing the revised rolls to ensure that genuine voters are not excluded and to prepare for any necessary follow-up action.
