The Election Commission (EC) announced on Monday that individuals excluded from Bihar’s draft electoral roll, published on August 1, can now submit a copy of their Aadhaar card to secure their inclusion, following a Supreme Court directive recognizing Aadhaar as a valid proof of identity. This decision addresses concerns over the omission of approximately 65 lakh individuals from the voter list, with details of the excluded available on the websites of Bihar’s district magistrates.
The EC clarified that claims and objections will be processed by electoral registration officers (EROs) only after a mandatory seven-day verification period for eligibility documents. Additionally, under the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) guidelines, no name can be removed from the draft list without a formal inquiry, a speaking order from the ERO, and a fair opportunity for the affected individuals to respond. This ensures transparency and due process in resolving discrepancies.
The move aims to streamline the correction process for Bihar’s electoral roll, enabling aggrieved citizens to reclaim their voting rights efficiently. With the Aadhaar-based verification system in place, the EC is working to ensure an accurate and inclusive voter list ahead of upcoming elections, reinforcing democratic participation in the state.
