MK Stalin and his party DMK have said that actor-turned-politician C Joseph Vijay was able to secure a majority in Tamil Nadu’s Assembly only after DMK allies were persuaded to extend support to the TVK. DMK spokesperson A Saravanan credited the party leadership for enabling the political realignment that led to the formation of the new government.
Saravanan congratulated Vijay on becoming Chief Minister but argued that the support for TVK came indirectly through the efforts of DMK chief Stalin, who he said intervened to prevent a constitutional crisis in the state. According to him, Stalin engaged in extensive consultations with allies to ensure stability rather than allow a political deadlock to continue.
The DMK spokesperson also criticised the Indian National Congress, noting that its five Assembly seats were won due to the organisational groundwork laid by DMK cadres during the election campaign. He suggested that the party’s electoral success in the state was closely tied to DMK’s broader alliance machinery.

The political developments come after a closely contested Assembly election in which TVK emerged as the single largest party with 108 seats but fell short of the majority mark in the 234-member House. Vijay, who won from both Perambur and Tiruchirappalli East, later retained only one seat, reducing the party’s tally to 107.
Support from Congress, CPI, and CPI(M), along with later backing from VCK and IUML, helped TVK cross the majority mark. With a combined strength of 120 MLAs, Vijay staked claim to form the government and was subsequently invited by Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar to take oath as Chief Minister and prove his majority in a confidence vote.
Vijay is scheduled to take oath at 10 am on Sunday in Chennai, marking the first time in six decades that Tamil Nadu will be governed by a party outside the DMK-AIADMK political binary. While DMK allies continue to maintain their association with the Dravidian party-led bloc, most are extending only outside support to the new government, underscoring the fragile and layered nature of the emerging coalition.
