New Delhi is experiencing targeted traffic restrictions today, January 22, as the city gears up for the iconic Beating Retreat ceremony — a vibrant musical finale to the Republic Day celebrations. The Delhi Traffic Police has imposed temporary closures in key central areas to facilitate smooth rehearsals at Vijay Chowk, ensuring participants, including military bands and contingents, can practice without interruptions.

From 4 pm to 6.30 pm, Vijay Chowk will be completely off-limits to general traffic. This closure extends to sections of Raisina Road, particularly from the roundabout near Krishi Bhawan heading toward Vijay Chowk. Vehicles will not be permitted to proceed beyond critical roundabouts such as those on Dara Shikoh Road, Krishna Menon Marg, and Sunehri Masjid when approaching Vijay Chowk during these hours.

Additionally, the stretch connecting Vijay Chowk to Rafi Marg, leading toward the Kartavya Path crossing, will remain sealed. These measures are part of preparations for the Beating Retreat, traditionally held at Vijay Chowk to mark the ceremonial lowering of flags with synchronized band performances by the armed forces, Delhi Police, and central paramilitary units. The event symbolizes discipline and national pride, drawing large crowds in its full form later this month.

Motorists are strongly urged to plan routes in advance and opt for alternatives to avoid delays and congestion in central Delhi. Recommended diversions include Ring Road, Ridge Road, Aurobindo Marg, Madarsa T-Point, Safdarjung Road (toward Kamal Ataturk Marg), Rani Jhansi Road, and Minto Road. Commuters should stay updated via official Delhi Traffic Police channels for any last-minute changes.
