Delhi woke up to its coldest November morning in three years on Monday, as temperatures dipped to 8.7 degrees Celsius — 3.6 degrees below normal — according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD). The last time the capital recorded a lower minimum temperature in November was on November 29, 2022, when the mercury touched 7.3 degrees Celsius.
IMD data shows that Delhi’s minimum temperature in November 2023 stood at 9.2 degrees Celsius, while in 2024 it was slightly higher at 9.5 degrees Celsius. The current reading marks a sharper-than-usual drop for mid-November, signaling an early onset of winter across north India. Meteorologists link this dip to clear skies and reduced wind movement at night, conditions that allow the surface to cool rapidly.
Mahesh Palawat, Vice President (Meteorology and Climate Change) at Skymet Weather, said temperatures are likely to drop further after the next spell of rainfall. “Till it rains, the day temperature will not fall. After the rain, temperatures will dip more rapidly,” he said, adding that Delhi may experience colder mornings and brisk evenings toward the end of the week.

Humidity levels were high at 92 percent on Monday morning, which, combined with the calm winds, added to the chill. Despite the lower mercury, the IMD has predicted clear skies throughout the day, with the maximum temperature likely to hover around 26 degrees Celsius.
Weather officials said light rain in the coming days may accentuate the drop in temperature, especially during early mornings. With winter setting in gradually, residents can expect foggy starts, lower visibility, and steadily colder days as November progresses into December.
