The Delhi High Court has scheduled a hearing for August 25 to address a plea by the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) requesting government accommodation for its national convenor and former Delhi Chief Minister, Arvind Kejriwal, in the national capital. Justice Sachin Datta deferred the matter for a comprehensive review of the petition, which urges the Centre to allocate a residence to Kejriwal.
The plea, represented by senior advocate Rahul Mehra, argues that under existing guidelines, the president of a recognized national party is entitled to one government residence in Delhi, provided they neither own a house nor have been assigned one in another official capacity. Mehra emphasized that Kejriwal, as AAP’s national convenor and president, meets all eligibility criteria and is requesting a centrally located residence.
Mehra informed the court that AAP initially approached the authorities on September 20, 2024, followed by a reminder, but received no response. He highlighted a prior court decision granting AAP office space, underscoring the party’s need for residential accommodation for its leader. The petition notes that Kejriwal vacated his official residence at 6, Flagstaff Road on October 4, 2024, after resigning as Chief Minister and has since been residing at another party member’s official residence near Mandi House.
