The Delhi government has announced a series of austerity and fuel-conservation measures, including two days of work-from-home for government employees, reduced use of official vehicles, and a push for online meetings, amid ongoing geopolitical tensions linked to the US-Iran conflict and its impact on global energy markets.Chief Minister Rekha Gupta said the decision aligns with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s appeal for reduced petroleum consumption in view of disruptions in global oil supply routes, including concerns surrounding the Strait of Hormuz.
The measures are aimed at lowering fuel usage and ensuring administrative efficiency during a period of global uncertainty.Under the new directive, government employees in Delhi will work from home for two days each week. The administration has also instructed departments to prioritise virtual meetings wherever possible to minimise physical travel and reduce dependence on official transport. The Chief Minister further stated that the use of government vehicles will be significantly curtailed as part of the broader austerity drive.
Rekha Gupta also said that the private sector will be encouraged to adopt work-from-home arrangements where feasible. She added that the Labour Department will monitor the implementation of these advisory measures, although compliance in the private sector will be guided rather than strictly enforced.Officials said the objective of the initiative is to contribute to national efforts aimed at conserving fuel and managing potential economic pressures arising from global supply disruptions.

The policy reflects a coordinated response to rising concerns over energy security, particularly in light of instability affecting key international shipping routes.Government sources indicated that ministers and senior officials have also been advised to minimise the use of official vehicles, rely more on public transport, and consider carpooling where possible.
Foreign travel by officials has reportedly been discouraged unless essential, as part of the effort to reduce non-critical expenditure. The measures are being positioned as temporary adjustments in administrative functioning, designed to address immediate global challenges while maintaining continuity of governance. Officials have indicated that the situation will be reviewed periodically depending on developments in international energy and security conditions.
