Delhi’s Art, Culture and Language Minister Kapil Mishra announced that the Delhi government will undertake measures to conserve and promote the Samrat Prithviraj Chauhan Memorial at Qila Rai Pithora in Mehrauli, New Delhi. The initiative aims to enhance public awareness of the site’s historical importance, which marks the legacy of the 12th-century Rajput king who once controlled much of north-western India.
During a visit to the memorial, accompanied by local MLA Gajender Singh Yadav, Mishra noted that while a cultural complex was established at the site in 2002, it has since been underutilized and poorly maintained. “The building exists, but there are no activities here, and maintenance is sorely needed,” Mishra stated. “This is a significant site in the history of India and Delhi, and we are committed to revitalizing it.”
Qila Rai Pithora, located near Saket in south Delhi, is recognized as the first city of Delhi, built by Prithviraj Chauhan. The site, including its ruins, falls under the jurisdiction of the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI). The memorial’s statue stands as a tribute to the legendary ruler.

Mishra also visited a nearby museum dedicated to Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, which employs modern technology to showcase the Maratha king’s life, struggles, and vision of swaraj. The Delhi government’s efforts signal a renewed focus on preserving and promoting the capital’s rich historical heritage.
