Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta launched an ambitious project to generate 55 megawatts of electricity by installing rooftop solar plants on 1,000 government buildings. The initiative was kicked off with the inauguration of a 25-kilowatt solar plant at the Rithala sewage treatment plant in North West Delhi. Speaking to reporters, Gupta announced that the project is slated for completion by January 2026, with plans to extend solar installations to other identified government buildings already underway.
In addition to the solar initiative, the Chief Minister inaugurated a fire station in Rithala and laid the foundation stone for a power grid project by Tata Power Delhi Distribution Limited (TPDDL). Emphasizing the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government's commitment to a "clean, green Delhi," Gupta highlighted efforts to address the city's waste management challenges. She noted that Delhi generates 11,000–12,000 metric tons of solid waste daily, of which only about 7,000 metric tons are currently processed. To tackle this, the government has prioritized waste-to-energy and biogas plants, alongside modernizing existing facilities.
Gupta also announced the launch of an e-waste processing plant in Tehkhand to manage discarded electronics, such as mobile phones, chargers, and batteries. Addressing another environmental concern, she pointed out the absence of biogas plants in Delhi until recently, despite the city's significant livestock population contributing to pollution in the Yamuna River. The city's first biogas plant, with a 200-ton-per-day capacity, was inaugurated earlier this week, and a second plant at Ghogha Dairy was scheduled for inauguration later that day.
