India and the United States are set to begin a fresh round of high-stakes trade negotiations in Washington on April 20, with both sides aiming to finalise the first phase of a proposed Bilateral Trade Agreement (BTA). The three-day talks, scheduled from April 20 to 22, mark the first in-person engagement since October 2025 and come at a crucial time as both countries seek to recalibrate trade terms amid shifting global economic conditions.
The Indian delegation, comprising 12 members and led by chief negotiator Darpan Jain, will engage with US counterparts on a range of issues, including tariffs, market access, and regulatory frameworks. Officials from India’s commerce, customs, and external affairs ministries are participating in the discussions, reflecting the broad scope of the negotiations. The talks are expected to address long-standing trade concerns while exploring opportunities to strengthen bilateral economic ties.
A key focus of the discussions will be recent changes in the US tariff regime following a ruling by the US Supreme Court that struck down sweeping reciprocal tariffs imposed under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA). In response, Washington introduced a temporary flat 10% tariff on imports from all countries for a 150-day period starting February 24. This move has altered the trade landscape, particularly affecting India’s earlier preferential tariff arrangements, which had reduced duties on certain goods and eliminated additional penalties linked to strategic imports.

The outcome of these negotiations will be closely watched, as both nations aim to strike a balance between protecting domestic industries and expanding trade opportunities. The talks are also significant in the broader context of geopolitical and economic cooperation, with the BTA seen as a step toward deepening the India-US strategic partnership while addressing evolving challenges in global trade dynamics.
