The CPI-M, the leading party in the Left Front in West Bengal, has adopted a new strategy for selecting candidates for the upcoming elections to municipal corporations and municipalities in the state. The urban civic body polls are scheduled to be held by the end of the current calendar year, with the party seeking greater flexibility at the district level in preparing for the contests.

Under the new approach, the finalisation of seat-sharing arrangements among existing Left Front allies will be handled by district committees rather than through a uniform formula prepared by the state committee. The district units will also take responsibility for selecting candidates, reducing direct intervention from the state leadership in local-level decisions.

However, any proposal by a district committee to form an electoral understanding with a political party or force outside the Left Front will require approval from the CPI-M state committee. A Central Committee member indicated that the arrangement is intended to give district units greater autonomy while ensuring that major alliance decisions remain subject to state-level scrutiny.

The CPI-M leadership has also ruled out any understanding with the different factions of the Trinamool Congress. According to the party, district committees will not be permitted to enter into arrangements with any of the factions identified in the current political landscape. The leadership views the civic polls as an opportunity to rebuild the Left’s organisational and electoral position in West Bengal.

A Central Committee member noted that the party has received feelers from some factions for district-level seat-sharing arrangements but has rejected such proposals. The CPI-M’s stated objective is to regain the principal opposition space in the state, with the forthcoming civic elections being viewed as an opportunity to begin that process through a focused Left Front campaign.

The possibility of an electoral understanding with the Congress also appears limited. A state Secretariat member pointed to the Congress leadership’s decision to end previous electoral arrangements with the Left Front during the 2026 Assembly polls. The CPI-M leadership therefore sees an independent Left Front contest as a way to assess its current organisational strength and electoral standing across West Bengal’s urban areas.
