Tamil Nadu Congress MP Jothimani has made a significant disclosure, revealing that Thalapathy Vijay, now leading Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam, is far from a stranger to the Congress ecosystem. As early as 2010, the superstar personally met Rahul Gandhi to seriously explore the prospect of formally joining the Congress party, though the proposal did not materialise due to various considerations at that time.
The statement gains prominence amid widespread speculation triggered by Vijay’s recent high-profile condolence visit to senior Congress leaders, including party president Mallikarjun Kharge and Rahul Gandhi, following the tragic stage collapse in Karurg during a TVK public meeting that resulted in multiple fatalities and injuries.
Jothimani firmly dismissed any suggestion that the condolence meeting signalled impending electoral realignment, describing such interactions during moments of collective grief as standard political courtesy rather than strategic negotiations. She reiterated that the Congress–DMK alliance remains rock-solid, deeply rooted in shared ideology and mutual trust built over decades.

The senior parliamentarian urged restraint in interpreting social media rumours and informal chatter, pointing out that alliance decisions of this magnitude are never taken impulsively or influenced by online narratives. She emphasised that substantial time remains before the next assembly elections, allowing ample scope for formal deliberations if and when required.
Nevertheless, the visible warmth displayed by several Tamil Nadu Congress functionaries towards TVK in recent weeks, coupled with internal voices advocating utilisation of Vijay’s massive fan base in neighbouring Kerala and Puducherry, had already created ripples within the DMK-led coalition, particularly after Deputy Chief Minister Udhayanidhi Stalin’s pointed public reference to the Congress “hand leaving” the alliance.
