Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay on Friday conducted a surprise inspection of the M C Raja Social Justice Hostel for college boys in Saidapet, Chennai, and interacted with students to understand the challenges they were facing. The Chief Minister was accompanied by Social Justice Minister Vanni Arasu and senior government officials during the visit. During the inspection, Vijay reviewed facilities at the hostel, including the canteen, accommodation rooms and other infrastructure.
He spoke directly with students staying at the hostel and sought feedback on the conditions and services being provided to them. The students raised several concerns during their interaction with the Chief Minister, including complaints about the poor quality of food served at the hostel. They also highlighted the absence of CCTV surveillance on the premises, expressing concerns about safety and security within the facility.
The students submitted a list of issues they wanted the government to address. Vijay assured them that their concerns would be examined and necessary steps would be taken to improve the hostel’s facilities and overall environment. Social Justice Minister Vanni Arasu said the visit was significant as it marked a direct interaction between the Chief Minister and students staying at a government hostel. He said the government would work towards resolving the issues raised by the residents.

“This is the first time a chief minister has directly interacted with students during a surprise visit. The students have raised some requirements, and we will ensure they are addressed,” Arasu said. The inspection is part of the state government’s efforts to review facilities provided to students in government-run hostels and understand issues at the ground level. Social justice hostels in Tamil Nadu provide accommodation and support facilities for students from disadvantaged communities pursuing higher education.
The visit comes amid growing focus on improving the quality of public institutions and ensuring better living conditions for students. Issues related to food quality, safety infrastructure and maintenance in government hostels have frequently been raised by students across different regions. Officials accompanying the Chief Minister noted the concerns raised during the inspection and are expected to coordinate with relevant departments to take corrective measures.
The government has emphasised that feedback from students will be considered while improving hostel facilities and services. Vijay’s interaction with students highlights the administration’s approach of conducting direct assessments of public facilities. The government is expected to monitor the progress of measures taken after the inspection to ensure that the concerns raised by hostel residents are addressed effectively.
