The Chinese research vessel Shi Yan 6 has returned to the Indian Ocean Region and is expected to head toward the Maldives in April, a development that is likely to attract close monitoring from regional powers, particularly India.
According to maritime tracking information and reports, the vessel recently entered the Indian Ocean after operating in other waters and is now moving toward the central part of the region. Shi Yan 6 is designed to carry out geophysical ocean research and marine surveys, collecting data about ocean currents, seabed conditions, and underwater geology.
The ship’s presence is notable because several Chinese research vessels have been operating in the Indian Ocean region in recent months. Reports indicate that ships such as Da Yang Hao and Da Yang Yi Hao are already active in nearby waters conducting geological and oceanographic studies. The arrival of Shi Yan 6 would add to China’s growing scientific fleet presence in the strategically important maritime zone.

China maintains that these vessels are deployed for legitimate scientific and marine research purposes. However, some defence analysts and regional observers say such ships are often equipped with advanced sensors capable of mapping the ocean floor and gathering hydrological data, which can also have potential strategic or military applications. Data collected during such missions can help improve submarine navigation and underwater surveillance capabilities.
The Indian Ocean is one of the world’s most strategically significant maritime corridors, carrying a large share of global trade and energy shipments. Because of its importance, the movement of research or survey vessels from major powers is often watched closely by regional navies and security agencies.
The upcoming port call in the Maldives could again highlight the delicate geopolitical balance in the region. In recent years, visits by Chinese research ships to ports in the Indian Ocean have drawn scrutiny from neighbouring countries, particularly as competition for influence across South Asia and the wider Indo-Pacific continues to intensify.
