The BRICS chairship will pass from India to China, which will host the grouping’s next summit in 2027, as Prime Minister Narendra Modi called for “concrete results” from the bloc as it enters its third decade. Addressing the open session of the BRICS Summit in New Delhi on Sunday, Modi said the world was looking to the grouping for outcomes rather than only ideas and commitments. He expressed confidence that member countries would work collectively to meet those expectations as BRICS continues to expand its role in global affairs.

Modi extended his best wishes to China as the next host of the BRICS summit and congratulated the leaders and their teams for contributing to the success of the New Delhi meeting. “I extend my best wishes once again to China as the next host of BRICS,” the Prime Minister said. He also commended the participating leaders and their teams for their efforts during the summit and wished them a safe and pleasant journey. The remarks marked the conclusion of India’s hosting of the summit and the transition towards the next phase of the grouping under China’s chairship.

Speaking during the second day of the summit, Modi underlined the significance of BRICS entering its third decade. He said the grouping had reached a stage where expectations from it were increasingly focused on tangible outcomes. According to the Prime Minister, the international community expected BRICS to deliver “concrete results” rather than limiting its role to discussions, ideas and commitments. He expressed confidence that the member countries would be able to fulfil those expectations through coordinated and collective efforts.

The Prime Minister’s remarks came as leaders of BRICS member and partner countries, outreach invitees and heads of international organisations gathered at Bharat Mandapam in New Delhi, the venue of the summit. Modi had earlier welcomed the participating leaders at the venue as the high-level discussions continued. The summit brought together representatives from BRICS member countries as well as partner countries and invited participants, providing a platform for discussions on issues of common interest and cooperation among participating nations.

Earlier on Sunday, Modi also described the morning proceedings at Bharat Mandapam as productive in a post on X. “Another productive morning at Bharat Mandapam. Happy to welcome the Leaders of BRICS Member and Partner Countries, Outreach Invitees and Heads of International Organisations,” he wrote. The post accompanied his engagement with leaders and other participants attending the summit. The gathering in New Delhi marked an important moment for India as it hosted the grouping and brought together a broad set of participating countries and international organisations.

With the New Delhi Summit concluding, attention now turns to China’s upcoming chairship and its preparations for the 2027 summit.
