Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Gyanesh Kumar on Friday said the record voter turnout witnessed in the recent Assembly elections reflects the growing trust of Indian citizens in the country's electoral process. Speaking at the first All India Media Conference organised by the Election Commission (EC) in New Delhi, Kumar described the unprecedented participation as a strong endorsement of the credibility, transparency and robustness of India's democratic institutions. He said the high level of public engagement demonstrated the strength and vibrancy of the country's electoral system.
Addressing representatives from the media, Kumar noted that the highest-ever voter participation recorded during the recent Assembly elections highlighted the confidence that electors continue to place in the Election Commission's conduct of polls. He emphasised that active voter participation remains one of the strongest indicators of a healthy democracy and credited citizens for exercising their democratic rights in large numbers across different states.
The conference was organised around the theme "Connecting Stakeholders, Strengthening Democracy: Role of Media in Elections." During his address, the Chief Election Commissioner underlined the importance of responsible journalism in ensuring free, fair and transparent elections. He said the media serves as a crucial link between election authorities and the public by disseminating accurate information, combating misinformation and encouraging informed electoral participation.

Kumar also expressed gratitude to voters for their participation in the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls, highlighting the importance of maintaining accurate and updated voter lists. He noted that public cooperation in electoral roll revision exercises plays a vital role in strengthening the integrity of elections and ensuring that every eligible citizen has the opportunity to vote.
The Election Commission has increasingly focused on improving voter awareness, expanding accessibility and adopting technology-driven initiatives to make the electoral process more efficient and inclusive. Officials believe these efforts, combined with extensive voter outreach programmes, have contributed to rising participation levels and enhanced confidence in the electoral system. The Commission has also continued to engage with stakeholders, including political parties, civil society organisations and media institutions, to further strengthen democratic processes.
The inaugural All India Media Conference formed part of the Election Commission's broader efforts to promote collaboration with media organisations and reinforce public confidence in elections. By highlighting the record voter turnout and acknowledging the role of both citizens and the media, the Commission reiterated its commitment to conducting free, fair and transparent elections while further strengthening India's democratic framework.
