Karnataka Chief Minister D K Shivakumar on Friday announced the postponement of his scheduled meeting with Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay over the Cauvery water dispute, citing the prevailing atmosphere surrounding the issue. Shivakumar said discussions would be held at a later date when conditions were more suitable for a cordial conversation. The meeting, scheduled for August 3, was initiated at Vijay’s request and was expected to focus on issues related to the Cauvery water-sharing dispute between the two southern states.

However, Shivakumar said the ongoing protests in Karnataka had created an environment that was not appropriate for talks at this stage. Farmers’ groups and Kannada organisations have been protesting against the direction to release 3,500 cusecs of Cauvery water daily to Tamil Nadu for 15 days. The protests have intensified in several parts of Karnataka, with demonstrators raising concerns over water availability for farmers and local communities. Announcing the postponement, Shivakumar said he would seek another opportunity to meet Vijay and discuss the matter in a more peaceful and constructive atmosphere.

The Karnataka government has maintained that the state’s water requirements and concerns of farmers must be considered while addressing the dispute. The Cauvery water issue has remained a long-standing source of disagreement between Karnataka and Tamil Nadu. Both states depend heavily on the river for agriculture, drinking water and other requirements, leading to repeated disputes during periods of lower rainfall and reduced reservoir levels. The current controversy follows directions regarding the release of water from Karnataka to Tamil Nadu.

Farmer groups in Karnataka have opposed the decision, arguing that the state should prioritise its own agricultural needs, especially amid concerns over water availability. Tamil Nadu, meanwhile, has traditionally maintained that it requires its share of Cauvery water as determined through established mechanisms and legal arrangements. The dispute has often required intervention from courts and water management authorities to regulate sharing between the two states. The proposed meeting between Shivakumar and Vijay was seen as an attempt at political dialogue between the neighbouring states.

However, the Karnataka chief minister’s decision to delay the talks reflects the sensitivity of the issue amid public protests and political pressure. The Cauvery dispute has historically carried significant political importance in both Karnataka and Tamil Nadu, with governments in both states facing pressure from farmers, regional groups and opposition parties over water-sharing decisions. Further discussions between the two chief ministers will depend on the political situation and mutual agreement on a new date. Until then, protests and public debate over Cauvery water allocation are expected to continue in Karnataka.
