Electricity and water supply to a Dalit settlement in a village in Balangir district have been disrupted, with residents alleging caste-based discrimination behind the move. The disruption has sparked concern among villagers, who say they have been struggling without basic amenities for several days.
Residents claimed that the piped water supply was cut off a few days ago and street lights in their locality were also switched off, plunging the settlement into darkness. According to them, other parts of the village continue to receive regular electricity and water, intensifying suspicions of discriminatory treatment.
Members of the affected community said the situation has made daily life difficult, particularly due to the lack of clean drinking water. One resident appealed to the government to intervene and ensure equal access to essential services so the community can live with dignity. A woman from the settlement added that the absence of electricity has made the streets unsafe at night, while water shortages worsen during hot days.
