Six people, including a woman, were killed and at least 21 others injured after a bus carrying devotees overturned in Punjab’s Fatehgarh Sahib district on Tuesday night, police said on Wednesday. The accident occurred near Himmatpura village on the Morinda–Chunni road in the Bassi Pathana area, shortly after the passengers were returning from a religious visit.
According to officials, the bus was carrying devotees who had travelled to Anandpur Sahib in Rupnagar district to offer prayers on the occasion of the Baisakhi festival. The group, all residents of Main Majri village in Fatehgarh Sahib, were on their return journey when the accident took place around 10 pm, leading to a sudden and fatal overturn of the vehicle.
Deputy Superintendent of Police Raj Kumar confirmed that six passengers died in the incident, while 21 others sustained injuries of varying severity. The injured were immediately rushed to nearby hospitals for treatment, where medical teams are currently attending to them. Authorities have not yet released details on the condition of those critically injured.

Police and rescue teams reached the accident site soon after the incident and carried out relief and evacuation operations. The area was secured as emergency responders worked to remove the overturned bus and assist trapped passengers. Locals also helped in shifting the injured to medical facilities before official teams arrived.
Preliminary reports suggest that the accident may have been caused by a mechanical malfunction, although officials have not confirmed the exact reason. A detailed investigation has been initiated to determine the circumstances that led to the bus losing control and overturning on the road.
Authorities have stated that further action will be taken based on the findings of the inquiry. The tragic incident has cast a shadow over the Baisakhi celebrations in the region, with families of the victims awaiting updates as treatment for the injured continues.
