A fire erupted at Bhatia Hospital, a private medical facility in Mumbai’s Grant Road area, on Monday afternoon, triggering panic and the temporary evacuation of nearly 250 people. The incident occurred at around 1.35 pm in the hospital’s CT-MRI scan unit. Fortunately, no injuries were reported, according to civic officials.
The Mumbai Fire Brigade (MFB) confirmed that the fire was confined to electrical wiring and installations within the CT-MRI unit. As a precautionary measure, patients, doctors, nurses, and other staff members were safely evacuated from the building. The blaze was brought under control within 10–15 minutes and was completely extinguished by 3 pm.
At least eight fire engines, along with additional firefighting vehicles and equipment, were rushed to the scene. Firefighters acted swiftly to prevent the fire from spreading to other parts of the hospital, ensuring that essential medical services were not severely disrupted.

A major concern during the operation was the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), which is located directly above the affected CT-MRI unit. The NICU houses newborn babies who require critical medical care. Fire officials described the situation as tense but manageable due to coordinated efforts between the hospital administration and emergency responders.
To protect the infants from smoke inhalation, MFB personnel used forced ventilation systems to clear smoke from the affected area. Additionally, a “stage shifting” procedure was carried out, temporarily relocating babies to another ward as a safety measure. Officials emphasized that this proactive step helped avoid any health risks to the newborns.
Preliminary assessments suggest that the fire may have been of electrical origin, possibly caused by a short circuit or overheating. However, authorities have stated that the exact cause is still under investigation. An inquiry is underway to determine whether faulty wiring or electrical overload contributed to the incident.
