An Assam Rifles soldier was killed in action and four others were injured in a suspected improvised explosive device (IED) blast in Nagaland's Chümoukedima district on Monday, officials said. The explosion occurred near an Assam Rifles training centre, triggering a large-scale security operation in the area. The injured personnel were shifted to a hospital for treatment, while security forces launched a search to trace those responsible for the attack.
According to officials, the soldiers were travelling in a Bolero SUV when the suspected IED exploded, striking the vehicle near the training facility. The blast took place in an area located close to the Nagaland-Assam interstate border, a region where security forces maintain a regular presence. The identity of the deceased soldier has not yet been officially disclosed.
The four injured personnel sustained injuries in the explosion and were immediately evacuated to a nearby medical facility. Authorities have not released details about the severity of their injuries but confirmed that they are receiving treatment. Following the incident, Assam Rifles personnel and other security agencies cordoned off the affected area and launched an extensive search operation. Bomb disposal teams and forensic experts are expected to examine the blast site to determine the nature of the explosive device and gather evidence that could assist investigators. No organisation has claimed responsibility for the attack so far.
The suspected IED blast highlights the continuing security challenges faced by forces operating in parts of the Northeast. Security agencies have remained on high alert in the region, conducting regular patrols and intelligence-based operations to prevent attacks on personnel and civilian infrastructure. Investigators are also examining whether the explosion was part of a pre-planned ambush targeting the security convoy.
Authorities said the investigation is underway and further details will be shared as more information becomes available. Security has been intensified in the surrounding areas, particularly along routes used by security forces near the interstate border. Officials have appealed for vigilance while assuring that all necessary measures are being taken to identify those behind the attack and prevent similar incidents in the future.
