Bodinayakanur, a prominent assembly constituency in Tamil Nadu’s Theni district, is at the centre of political attention ahead of the 2026 Assembly elections. Since 1989, it has been a significant battleground, gaining fame when former Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa launched her political career here. Historically an AIADMK stronghold, the constituency has seen DMK victories only twice. In the past three elections – 2011, 2016, and 2021 – O Panneerselvam secured consecutive wins as an AIADMK candidate, building a strong personal rapport with voters. However, the political landscape has shifted dramatically with Panneerselvam now contesting under the DMK banner. This change has raised questions about whether he can maintain his winning streak despite switching parties.
Located at the foothills of the Western Ghats, Bodinayakanur is popularly known as India’s “cardamom capital", with one of the largest cardamom procurement centres attracting farmers from neighbouring Kerala. Agriculture remains the backbone of the local economy, with mango cultivation being another major activity. Farmers have faced challenges over the years, including low pricing despite good yields, leading to financial stress. Local communities also demand extended water supply from the Mullaiperiyar dam through the 18th canal to support irrigation. These economic and agricultural concerns continue to play a crucial role in shaping voter sentiment ahead of the elections.
Panneerselvam retains strong goodwill among Bodinayakanur voters due to his long-standing connection with the constituency. During his tenure as MLA and Deputy Chief Minister, he facilitated the establishment of schools, colleges, and healthcare facilities. The constituency has a notable presence of communities like Devanga Chettiyar, Thevar, and Naidu, with Panneerselvam, a member of the Thevar community, historically benefiting from this support. Yet, his switch from AIADMK to DMK introduces uncertainty into traditional voting patterns. Voter loyalty may be influenced not just by candidate reputation but also by party affiliation and community alliances this election cycle.

The AIADMK has fielded VT Narayanasamy, who is relatively less known among voters. To strengthen their position, the party is relying on its alliance with TTV Dhinakaran, who performed well in the 2024 Theni Lok Sabha constituency. AIADMK leaders, including J Jayavardhan, argue that Panneerselvam’s shift does not diminish the party’s influence and expect loyalty toward the “Two Leaves” symbol to prevail. The contest is now shaped by party alliances, community dynamics, and the personal influence of the candidates, making it a closely watched race.
With multiple factors converging, Bodinayakanur is once again poised to be a key constituency in the 2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly elections. The outcome will indicate whether personal influence or party affiliation holds greater sway over voters in this politically significant seat. Farmers’ issues, community loyalties, and candidate reputations are expected to heavily impact results. As both DMK and AIADMK intensify their campaigns, political analysts and voters alike are keeping a close eye on the evolving dynamics. The constituency’s verdict may well reflect broader electoral trends across the state this year.
