The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has announced that a lottery to determine ward reservations for the upcoming civic elections will be conducted on November 11 at Bal Gandharva Rangmandir in Bandra West. The draw will allocate seats among categories including Scheduled Castes (women), Scheduled Tribes (women), Other Backward Classes (general and women), and women in the general category across Mumbai’s 227 wards. This step is essential for ensuring constitutional compliance in representation and sets the stage for the long-delayed municipal polls.
The lottery process will assign reservations in a transparent manner, adhering to established guidelines to promote equitable political participation. With elections expected to be notified soon, the outcome will significantly influence candidate selection and electoral strategies of political parties. Reserved wards play a critical role in empowering marginalized communities and women, thereby strengthening inclusive governance in India’s largest municipal corporation.
Following the draw, the BMC will release a draft reservation list on November 14. Citizens and stakeholders may submit objections or suggestions until 3 PM on November 20. All representations will be reviewed before the final reservation notification is issued, ensuring accuracy and public trust in the process. Detailed information and updates will be available on the official BMC website.

The civic body oversees a multi-trillion-rupee budget and delivers essential services such as water supply, sanitation, healthcare, and infrastructure development. Prolonged delays in holding elections since 2022 have impacted administrative efficiency and public accountability. The upcoming polls, once scheduled, will restore elected representation and enable policy implementation aligned with citizen priorities.
The November 11 lottery marks a decisive milestone in Mumbai’s electoral calendar. As preparations advance, political parties, civil society, and residents are closely monitoring developments. The finalization of ward reservations will pave the way for candidate nominations and campaign activities in the weeks ahead.
