Former Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) national spokesperson Shehzad Poonawalla on Friday praised the party’s leadership model, saying only the BJP could provide the country with a "self-made" leader like Prime Minister Narendra Modi. His remarks came amid speculation about his association with the party after changes to his social media profile triggered discussions about whether he had stepped away from the organisation. Poonawalla made the comments in a post on X, where he said the BJP had the ability to promote leaders based on merit rather than family background.

Referring indirectly to Opposition parties, he said, "The rest will only promote their children and dynasties," in an apparent criticism of what the BJP has often described as dynastic politics among rival political groups. The remarks came after Poonawalla removed references to the BJP from his X bio, leading to speculation on social media about whether he had resigned from the party or changed his political position. However, no formal announcement regarding his resignation or exit from the BJP has been made, and his latest comments continued to express support for the party.

In his post, Poonawalla also described the BJP as the "best bet for the youth", highlighting the party’s opportunities for young leaders. His statement came against the backdrop of recent student protests at Delhi’s Jantar Mantar over allegations related to the NEET-UG paper leak. The protests had intensified political pressure on the government and eventually led to the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan, according to political developments cited at the time. Poonawalla’s comments also reflected a long-running political debate between the BJP and Opposition parties over leadership structures.

Shehzad Poonawalla, who joined the BJP after leaving the Congress, has previously been vocal in defending the party’s positions and criticising Opposition leaders.
