BJP Rajya Sabha MP Sudhanshu Trivedi unleashed a scathing attack on Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, accusing him of undermining the Election Commission of India (ECI) with a mindset reminiscent of the Emergency era under Indira Gandhi.
Speaking at the 4th Shri Balramji Dass Tandon Memorial Lecture at Panjab University, Trivedi claimed Rahul’s repeated criticism of the ECI reveals a Congress mentality unchanged since the 1975 Emergency. “Fifty years ago, Indira Gandhi judged elections by her victories; today, Rahul Gandhi does the same,” he charged.
Trivedi highlighted Rahul’s selective praise for the ECI, noting that the Congress leader lauded the poll body’s work in states like Punjab, Jammu and Kashmir, and Tamil Nadu, but criticized it in states like Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, and Bihar, where Congress faced defeats. On July 24, Rahul alleged “100 per cent proof” of ECI-enabled cheating in a Karnataka constituency, warning the commission of consequences. A day earlier, he claimed elections were being “stolen” nationwide, citing a supposed “vote theft” modus operandi uncovered by Congress.
Addressing the upcoming 2027 Punjab Assembly elections, Trivedi expressed confidence in growing support for the BJP, dismissing “experimental politics” like that seen in Delhi. On potential alliances with the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD), he deferred to party leadership, emphasizing the NDA’s growing strength under Prime Minister Narendra Modi. “India is moving forward with new energy, and the NDA is gaining support nationwide,” he said.
