Manipur BJP MLA Vungzagin Valte, who had been severely injured during the Meitei-Kuki ethnic clashes in May 2023, passed away today at a hospital in Gurugram, Haryana. Valte, belonging to the Zomi tribes, had spent nearly two years receiving treatment in Delhi, but continued health complications stemming from the attack plagued him even after his return to Manipur. His injuries left him wheelchair-bound and with significant difficulty in speaking and performing routine physical activities.
Valte sustained life-altering head injuries during a violent confrontation in Imphal, allegedly at the hands of members of the Meitei group Arambai Tenggol (AT). The assault had caused severe trauma, requiring long-term medical attention and rehabilitation. Despite months of intensive care, the lasting effects of the injuries ultimately contributed to his deteriorating condition.
The BJP legislator represented the Thanlon assembly constituency in Churachandpur district. Over the past two years, he became a symbol of resilience within his community, often inspiring conversations about the challenges faced by ethnic minority leaders during periods of conflict in Manipur. His passing is being mourned across political and tribal lines in the state.

On February 8, Valte was airlifted from Imphal to Delhi after experiencing severe breathlessness and chest pain. Manipur’s Chief Minister Y Khemchand Singh personally visited him before the flight, sharing images of the meeting on social media. The incident highlighted the ongoing health struggles Valte faced in the months leading up to his death.
Valte’s family and local leaders have called for justice and acknowledgment of the attack that left him incapacitated. The BJP and other political figures have expressed condolences, emphasizing the need for peace and dialogue in the region to prevent further ethnic violence. His death marks a somber reminder of the human toll of prolonged communal conflicts in Manipur.
