The Bharatiya Janata Party on Monday appointed senior leader and six-term Darbhanga MLA Sanjay Saraogi as the new president of its Bihar unit, replacing incumbent state chief and Industry Minister Dilip Kumar Jaiswal. The decision was formally announced through a notification issued by BJP national general secretary Arun Singh.
The appointment, made by BJP national president JP Nadda, comes into effect immediately, and Saraogi is expected to formally assume charge later in the evening. Party insiders view the move as part of a broader organisational reshuffle aimed at strengthening the BJP’s leadership structure in Bihar ahead of upcoming political challenges.
A seasoned politician, Sanjay Saraogi has represented the Darbhanga Assembly constituency since February 2005, winning six consecutive elections. He previously served as the Minister for Revenue and Land Reforms in the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) government and is known for his administrative experience and grassroots connect.

Saraogi began his political journey with the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) during his student days and formally joined the BJP in 1995. Over the years, he rose through the organisational ranks, serving as district secretary of the Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha and later as convenor of the party’s cow protection cell in Bihar.
The 56-year-old leader holds a master’s degree in commerce and business administration and enjoys strong support within the influential Vaishya community, a core BJP voter base. His elevation is also seen as a strategic attempt to balance caste representation following the appointment of Nitin Nabin as BJP national working president.
Additionally, Saraogi’s appointment is expected to address regional aspirations, particularly in the Mithilanchal belt, which has expressed concerns over under-representation in the current NDA government led by Chief Minister Nitish Kumar. Darbhanga, a cultural and political hub of the Mithila region, is likely to gain renewed prominence within the party’s Bihar unit.
