The Bihar government on Tuesday transferred Rs 579.23 crore in financial assistance to 8,27,472 flood-affected families across the state. Chief Minister Samrat Chaudhary transferred Rs 7,000 each to the bank accounts of eligible beneficiaries through Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT), providing immediate financial support to families affected by the floods.

Deputy Chief Minister Vijay Kumar Chaudhary was also present during the programme. The Disaster Management Department prepared the list of beneficiaries based on reports submitted by Circle Officers from the affected districts, following which the assistance was transferred directly to the bank accounts of eligible families.

Flooding has affected 15 districts in Bihar this year, with the Ganga, Gandak, Kosi and Punpun among the major rivers contributing to the situation. Government data indicates that 575 Gram Panchayats across 88 blocks have been affected, impacting approximately 49.46 lakh people. The affected districts include Patna, Bhojpur, Saran, Vaishali, Bhagalpur, Begusarai, Buxar, Samastipur, Munger, Katihar, Lakhisarai, Khagaria, Purnea, Madhepura and Arwal.

Alongside financial assistance, the state government is continuing relief operations through community kitchens and relief camps. At present, 1,260 community kitchens are functioning across Bihar and have served around 1.19 crore meals to people in flood-affected areas. The number of community kitchens was recently increased from 1,257 to 1,260 as the administration continued efforts to provide food assistance.

Thirteen relief camps are also operational, with arrangements for accommodation, food, medical care and other essential facilities for 11,060 people staying there. The number of relief camps has been reduced from 15 to 13, while relief operations continue in areas affected by rising river levels. The government is also extending support to livestock, with 13,121 quintals of cattle feed distributed so far in affected areas.

According to reports from the Central Water Commission and the Meteorological Department, the Ganga’s water level is receding at Sultanganj in Bhagalpur. However, several rivers continue to flow above the danger mark, including the Kosi at Baltara and Kursela, Burhi Gandak at Khagaria, Ganga at several locations in Patna, Bhagalpur and Munger, Bagmati at Benibad, Punpun at Sripalpur and Ghaghara at Darauli. District administrations are maintaining close surveillance as the government continues financial assistance and relief measures covering food, shelter, medical care and livestock support.
