A Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport (BEST) bus collided with a metro rail pillar near Goregaon in Mumbai on Monday evening, leaving two people injured, police said. The bus, which was operated under a wet-lease arrangement, was involved in the incident at around 5pm near Ittbhatti Junction, outside Oberoi Mall. The accident caused injuries to a BEST employee and a passenger travelling on the bus.

According to a statement issued by BEST, the bus was travelling from Dindoshi Depot towards Bhayander Station East when the incident occurred. The vehicle was taking a right turn beneath the Dindoshi flyover at the traffic signal opposite Oberoi Mall. During the turn, the bus reportedly grazed the rear-right side of a private car before moving into and colliding with a metro rail pillar.

The injured individuals were identified as 58-year-old Rajendra Murlidhar Sonawane, a BEST employee, and 57-year-old Mangesh Ramchandra Modlekar, a passenger. Sonawane sustained a head injury and required three stitches. Modlekar suffered injuries to his chin and head and received one stitch on his chin and five stitches on his head, police said.

Both injured persons were taken to Trauma Care Hospital in Jogeshwari East for medical treatment. Authorities arranged medical assistance shortly after the incident, while police personnel were deployed at the location to manage the situation and assist those affected. The extent of their injuries was described as non-fatal in the information available.

Following the collision, the damaged bus was removed from the spot using a BEST towing vehicle. It was subsequently taken to Vanrai police station as part of the investigation into the incident. Officials are examining the circumstances surrounding the turn, the contact with the private car and the subsequent collision with the metro pillar.

The incident has raised concerns over road safety and vehicle movement around busy junctions beneath flyovers and near major commercial areas. Police are expected to review available evidence and statements to determine how the collision occurred. Further details regarding any action against the driver or the exact cause of the accident were not immediately available
