An American woman visiting Bengaluru has alleged that an Uber driver asked her to get out of the car midway through a ride following a dispute over toll charges. Dana Marie, in a post on Instagram, said she had booked the cab because she was travelling to an area where parking was difficult. According to her account, the journey to the destination was uneventful, but a dispute arose during the return trip when the driver allegedly demanded an additional payment for a toll.
Marie said that around three to five minutes into the return journey, the driver told her that the fare was insufficient and asked her to pay extra for the toll. She claimed she told him that the toll was already included in the fare and pointed out that she had previously travelled along the same route without being asked to make a separate payment. She also suggested contacting Uber to verify whether the toll was covered under the fare, but alleged that the driver instead asked her to leave the vehicle.
According to Marie, the driver allegedly told her to “GET OUT OF THE CAR” while the vehicle was at a busy three-way intersection. She said she refused to leave the car in the middle of traffic, after which the driver allegedly pulled over to the side of the same intersection and again told her to get out. Marie eventually left the vehicle and waited for about 10 minutes for another Uber. She said she felt uncomfortable while waiting in the area.

Marie said the second Uber driver later took her home along the same route without asking her to pay any additional toll charges. She subsequently contacted Uber to clarify the fare and claimed the company confirmed that the toll was included. She also reported the incident to Uber, saying she believed she was not the only passenger to have faced a similar situation and called for the practice to stop, describing it as a safety concern.
In an update to her Instagram post, Marie said Uber contacted her and told her it had “reduced the likelihood” of matching her with the same driver again. However, she said she was told to cancel the ride if she was matched with the driver in the future. Marie questioned the safety of that response, arguing that a driver would already have access to her location by the time the matching took place. She urged Uber and the police to investigate the incident and establish what happened.
Police have responded to Marie’s social media post and said the matter had been forwarded to the concerned department. The allegations have not been independently established, and the account of the fare dispute and the driver’s actions remains based on Marie’s version of events. The incident has nevertheless raised concerns over passenger safety and the handling of disputes involving toll charges during app-based cab rides.
