Bayern Munich defeated RB Leipzig 2-0 on Wednesday to secure a place in the German Cup semi-finals for the first time since 2020, ending a run of quarter-final exits in the competition. Goals from Harry Kane and Luis Diaz in a decisive second-half spell ensured Bayern’s progression and kept their hopes alive for a record-extending 21st domestic cup title.
After a competitive opening period, Bayern seized control with two goals in four minutes shortly after the hour mark. Kane converted from the penalty spot after Leipzig goalkeeper Maarten Vandevoordt fouled Josip Stanisic inside the area. The strike was Kane’s 39th goal in all competitions this season and his fifth against Leipzig. Soon after, Michael Olise launched a swift counterattack and set up Diaz, who continued his recent scoring run with his fifth goal in three matches.
Leipzig, who have lifted the German Cup twice since Bayern’s last appearance in the final, started brightly and thought they had taken the lead early on through Christoph Baumgartner. However, the effort was ruled out for a narrow offside. The visitors showed significant improvement compared to their heavy Bundesliga defeats to Bayern this season, where they lost by a combined 11-1 scoreline, but were unable to capitalise on their chances.

Bayern coach Vincent Kompany praised Kane’s impact, saying, “I don’t know if he was born like that, but he has talent, and he worked hard to improve it. And we’re enjoying these moments with Harry.” Kane’s penalty was also his 12th successful spot-kick across all competitions this campaign, underlining his consistency in front of goal.
Leipzig captain David Raum expressed disappointment after the match, telling ARD that his side lacked fortune and conceded avoidable goals. Bayern now join holders Stuttgart, Bayer Leverkusen, and Freiburg in the semi-finals, with the final set to be played at Berlin’s Olympic Stadium on May 23.
