Mobile internet services were suspended within a 1.5-kilometre radius of Jantar Mantar until midnight on Thursday as student protests in the national capital continued. Authorities also imposed restrictions under Section 163 outside Union Home Minister Amit Shah’s residence, with police issuing warnings and tightening security in sensitive areas.

The internet suspension comes amid ongoing demonstrations led by the satirical Cockroach Janta Party (CJP), whose protest at Jantar Mantar has entered its 34th day. The restrictions were introduced as authorities sought to maintain law and order while large numbers of protesters continued to gather in central Delhi.

The unrest also affected commercial activity in the city. The New Delhi Traders Association (NDTA) advised businesses in Connaught Place to close early, leading to the shutdown of shops and restaurants after 6:30 pm. Traders cited safety concerns and the prevailing security situation as reasons for the precautionary measure.

Political activity intensified as opposition Members of Parliament and leaders of the INDIA alliance gathered at Gandhi Smriti on Tees January Marg following a meeting at the residence of the Leader of the Opposition. The meeting focused on the government’s response to the protests and recent action taken against demonstrators in the capital.

Negotiations between the Centre and the CJP have remained deadlocked despite efforts to resolve the standoff. The central government said it had reached out to the protesters on four occasions, while Union Minister Jitendra Singh stated that the government remained open to discussions and invited student representatives to meet at BJP president J.P. Nadda’s residence or office.

However, protest organisers maintained that any dialogue should take place at a neutral venue near Jantar Mantar rather than at a political office. With talks yet to make progress, demonstrations continued in the capital, while authorities maintained heightened security and monitored the situation closely.
