Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Wednesday said around ₹1,000 crore would be required to rehabilitate people affected by the recent floods in the state. Sarma said the Centre would provide assistance for rebuilding the lives and livelihoods of flood-hit families after a detailed assessment of the damage is completed. The assessment is currently being carried out in four districts and is scheduled to continue until August 30.

Sarma said Prime Minister Narendra Modi had assured him that the Centre would extend support for rehabilitation after the survey establishes the extent of the losses. The chief minister stressed that the assessment process was being conducted carefully to ensure that genuine beneficiaries receive assistance and that there are no false claims. He said the Prime Minister had specifically instructed authorities to ensure that relief and rehabilitation claims were properly verified.

According to Sarma, around 8,000 families have been surveyed so far, with damage estimated at approximately ₹150 crore based on the assessments completed. The state government expects the ongoing exercise to identify around 60,000 affected families by August 30. The findings will subsequently undergo a verification process, with the details expected to be double-checked by September 15 before another round of scrutiny is undertaken.

The chief minister said the multiple rounds of verification were intended to ensure that no eligible flood-affected family is left out of the rehabilitation process. The exercise is also aimed at preventing duplication and inaccurate claims while establishing the actual extent of damage suffered by households. The final assessment will help determine the scale of financial assistance required and the support that Assam seeks from the Centre for long-term rehabilitation.

Sarma’s remarks come as Assam continues to deal with the impact of severe flooding, which has affected large numbers of people across the state. While immediate relief focuses on providing essential assistance to affected communities, rehabilitation involves restoring homes, livelihoods and other assets damaged by the floods. The state government’s assessment is therefore expected to play a key role in determining the financial requirements for the next phase of recovery.

The chief minister also said that social media influencers from Assam and outside the state have contributed to relief efforts. According to Sarma, 72 influencers have raised funds for flood relief, adding another layer of public participation to the ongoing response. The fundraising efforts come as individuals and organisations seek to support communities affected by the disaster.

The final requirement for rehabilitation will depend on the findings of the ongoing survey and subsequent verification. With the assessment expected to cover about 60,000 families by the end of August, the state government will have a clearer picture of the scale of damage after the process is completed. Sarma’s estimate of ₹1,000 crore reflects the anticipated requirement for rebuilding and rehabilitation, while the Centre’s assistance is expected to follow the completion and verification of the damage assessment.
