Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Wednesday began a two-day brainstorming session with senior police officials to review the state’s law and order situation and assess key challenges facing the police force. The conference of Senior Superintendents of Police (SSPs) is being held at the Lachit Borphukan Police Academy in Dergaon, Golaghat district, on September 2 and 3.

The discussions are focused on policing priorities, particularly efforts to combat drug trafficking and prevent crimes against women and children. The meeting comes amid an intensified anti-drug campaign in Assam, with the state government seeking stronger action against trafficking networks and improved enforcement. The conference is also expected to examine district-level policing strategies and areas requiring greater coordination.

Sarma has recently highlighted the scale of the state’s anti-drug efforts, noting that narcotics worth around Rs 300 crore were destroyed during the first 100 days of the present government. In a separate 10-day operation, authorities seized drugs and related substances valued at around Rs 472 crore. The Chief Minister has also stressed the need for a professionally equipped police force capable of responding to organised crime and emerging security challenges.

The SSP conference is taking place alongside efforts to strengthen the state police workforce. Earlier on Wednesday, Sarma attended the passing-out parade of 32 Deputy Superintendents of Police and 371 communication branch constables at the Lachit Borphukan Police Academy. The newly trained personnel formally joined the Assam Police after completing their training.

Issues concerning the safety of women and children, crime prevention, drug trafficking and overall maintenance of law and order are expected to remain central to the two-day deliberations. The discussions are aimed at identifying practical measures for improving coordination among district police units, strengthening preventive policing and ensuring faster responses to emerging threats.

The Assam Police has also expanded public-facing initiatives covering areas such as women's rights, child rights, cybercrime and community policing. The conference is expected to place greater emphasis on coordinated policing, preventive measures and response mechanisms as the state works to address evolving law and order challenges and improve public safety.
